Shooting suspects die after crashing during police chase

CHARLESTON, SC (WIS) - Two men are dead in the Lowcountry after Charleston County deputies say they refused to pull over, the chase ending in a fatal crash.

Deputies were called to Club 17 North on Highway 17 in McClellanville about 2:30am Saturday after reports of gunshots. Witnesses described a Jeep Cherokee being driven by the suspects, which deputies soon spotted.

Deputies say the Cherokee was being driven by 27-year-old Marcus Taylor of Huger. Deputies tried to pull Taylor over, but say he refused to stop.

Taylor led the pursuing deputies down 17 North and onto Highway 45. At some point deputies say Taylor lost control and went off the road, flipped several times and hit a number of trees.

Taylor and his passenger, 23-year-old Robert White, Jr. of Huger, were ejected from the car. They were both pronounced dead at the scene, according to officials.

The accident is being investigated by the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Officials say Taylor and White were involved with the reported gunshots, but they don't know why the men were shooting, or their intended target.
