WIS News 10 - Columbia, South Carolina | Chloroform spill at Columbia law firm sends one to hospital

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Traffic was backed up on Columbia's Millwood Avenue Tuesday after officials say a bag containing chloroform was spilled at a Columbia law firm.
Columbia firefighters said the chloroform was in a plastic bag inside the Pincus and Loomis Law Firm. Richland County deputies said an employee of the law firm accidentally dropped the bag.
Six people were inside the building when the spill happened. One person was treated at the hospital, but should be okay.
Chloroform is used to induce unconsciousness and is a component of human decomposition.
A Columbia Fire Dept. hazardous materials team had to cut the affected carpet out of the floor. Traffic moved slowly through the areas while emergency vehicles were parked outside.
Deputies are still trying to find out why the chloroform was in the law firm. No criminal charges have been filed.
Pincus and Loomis says on its Web site that the firm specializes in divorce and child custody disputes.
