One dead after Newberry altercation turns fatal; suspect in custody

NEWBERRY, SC (WIS) - Authorities in Newberry County say a man accused of stabbing another man to death is in custody.

Newberry County deputies say Raymond Robinson stabbed James Wise to death.

Officers say alcohol played a significant factor in the altercation.

According to Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster, officers received a call Sunday afternoon just before 6pm about a man lying in the roadway on Olive Road.

Officers say that when they located the man, he was holding a knife by the handle in his right hand. The officers also found a kitchen knife with a wooden handle in his front pocket. 

Deputies say that the man had been stabbed just under his breastbone. He was transported by air to Palmetto Richland Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 10:30pm.

The Newberry County Sheriff's Office has identified the victim as 51-year-old James Jimmy Wise Sr., 51, of Olive Road in Newberry. 

Officers have apprehended the other man in this incident, identified as 51-year-old Raymond Robinson, of Oxner Road, in Newberry.

Officials say Robinson was located hiding near his family's home. He was taken into custody without incident and is being transported for medical treatment.

Authorities say both men have significant prior criminal records.
