KERSHAW COUNTY, SC (WIS) - The chances of saving JV sports in Kershaw County are looking a little brighter after county council voted to raise the county's millage rate.
After hearing a dozen testimonials from the public, the council voted. In a narrow 4-to-3 vote, council voted to increase the county millage.
Councilman Bobby Gary voted for the increase. He says he did so with the attempt to help incur some of the school district's costs.
The school board requested an increase of 10.2. The council approved an increase of 3.5.
This means for this fiscal year, Kershaw County neighbors will pay an extra $18 for every $100,000 of each business or non-primary residence, like a second home.
"I don't mind how much they go up," said Charles Bennett from Lugoff. "I'd be willing to pay extra taxes for our kids."
The new taxes will help the school district.
Superintendent Dr. Frank Morgan says he's not sure if they'll be enough to save JV and middle school sports.
"County council helped us out some tonight and I really appreciated it. That's the good news," said Dr. Morgan. "The bad news is we still have some very, very difficult decisions to make. Whether it has to do with student activities or whether it has to do with people who work with children on a daily basis."
Dr. Morgan says Wednesday morning he'll sit down with the school board to figure out what these new taxes can help save for the schools. He says the final cuts will likely be announced at Wednesday night's school board meeting.
"I think we just need to sit down and take a hard look at what's necessary and what the number we need to reach is and have a good, thoughtful discussion," said Dr. Morgan.
