900-ton nuclear reactor's weight preventing easy transport to Barnwell Co.

(San Diego-AP) Feb. 14, 2003 - Southern California Edison officials say there are a series of problems with plans to move an old nuclear reactor to South Carolina.

The 900-ton reactor from the San Onofre power plant was supposed to be shipped to Barnwell County in March. Edison officials say there may be too many challenges to meet their projected deadlines.

Officials say the Panama Canal Authority has denied the company access through the waterway, because the reactor is six times heavier than the allowable amount. Canal officials also worry the reactor could fall off a barge and block the canal.

Edison spokesman Ray Golden says the company has offered to send salvaging equipment with the barge. If canal officials don't change their mind, Edison will either have to ship the reactor around South America or around Africa.
