NRC: Oconee Nuclear Station fixed problems

(Seneca-AP) Jan. 24, 2003 -- Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials say two safety violations at Oconee Nuclear Station have been fixed. Commission officials say Duke Energy has corrected two problems that were found during a refueling outage at the station's Unit 1 reactor containment building.

The problem cited in the fall of 2000 was a lack of procedural controls in the reactor containment building. In 2001, officials found a bearing had failed in an emergency water pump in the cooling system. Both problems were classified as low to moderate risk.

Victor McCree is deputy director of reactor projects for the commission's Atlanta office. He says a recent safety check at the plant found no significant concerns, McCree said.
