Anti-war protests in NC attract hundreds

(North Carolina-AP) Jan. 18, 2003 - Hundreds of protesters held signs and chanted anti-wars slogans across North Carolina Saturday. They demonstrated in solidarity with tens of thousands of activists protesting near the US Capitol against war with Iraq earlier Saturday afternoon.

More than 300 people lined the streets around Brightleaf Square, a series of shops and restaurants in downtown Durham. Several passing motorists honked their horns in support.

In Charlotte, about 100 people gathered around the Martin Luther King Junior monument in Marshall Park for a peace vigil. Some protesters say the United States would be fighting over oil if it attacks Iraq. Others say the US government is putting soldiers' lives in danger.
