Food Lion breaks ground on 'green' store

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A greener way of life is all the rage these days, and now for the first time a grocery store is taking charge by making everything environmentally friendly.

Instead of a ribbon cutting ceremony, they planted a tree. Rather than hand out hard hats, they put them in reuseable shopping bags. And when they could have handed out press releases, they handed out USB drives.

The new Food Lion on Hard Scrabble Road won't be open until later this year, but the green initiative they are planning has already started.

"It's an evolution to a decades-long journey for environmental concerns with our environmental facilities and this store is just the next step," says Kyle Mitchell.

The new store will have things you haven't seen before, from the ceiling lights that dim when sunlight can brighten up the store, to a more energy efficient refrigeration system, to generators that run on biodiesel fuel. Though Food Lion is looking for the benefits for the company itself, they also hope to inspire customers to do more too.

"We are going to have an environmental kiosk. Having a lot of information about our store and how it benefits the environment. A lot of ways we are going to be efficient with our water, with our power," says Brian Mills.

"In the long run operating cost should be lower than what we see in standard prototypes," says Mitchell.

Everything about this store will be geared towards a greener future. And the plan is that this store won't be the last of it's kind.

"We are hoping to progress in this as we build new stores," says Mills.

The store is set to open later in the year. It will employ around 50 people.
