Viewer finds baby bird with clipped wing, seeks help

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - A WIS News 10 viewer found an exotic bird on Lake Murray with half of its wing clipped off.

Don Pittman found the bird on Sunday and has been calling everyone he could think of for help, but has been unsuccessful.

"He's scared to death but I don't think he's in pain," said Pittman of the bird.

Pittman found the little guy in the water. The clipped wing took the wind right out from underneath him.

Now he's feeding the guy by hand -- taking cues from the baby's mama.

"I watched her build the nest, sit on the eggs, watched her feed babies and was at the house when they flew off yesterday," said Pittman.

A nature lover, yes, but a bird expert he is not. Pittman's made about a dozen calls.

"I want them to call and feed the bird and take care of it cause I can't," said Pittman.

Pittman says he knows how good it feels to be in the place where you belong and that's whay he hopes somebody will come through for the little guy in the clutch.

We made some calls as well. The Department of Natural Resources sent us to Riverbanks Zoo. The zoo said they would take the injured animal, but the hitch is they don't do pick-ups. Pittman is blind in one eye and can't drive into town, so as of right now, he's looking for anyone who can help him help this bird.
