Sen. DeMint meets with NASA nominee, Columbia native

WASHINGTON, DC (WIS) - Wednesday U.S. Senator Jim DeMint met with Columbia native Major General Charles F. Bolden, Jr. to discuss his recent nomination by President Obama to become NASA Administrator.

Sen. DeMint serves on the Senate Commerce Committee, which will consider his nomination, and says he will strongly push for Bolden's confirmation.

"I was very glad to be able to sit down with General Bolden today," DeMint said in a statement. "I was impressed with his knowledge of NASA, and I am confident he will provide valuable leadership to the agency at a critical time in its history. His service reflects well on our nation and on our state. All South Carolinians should be proud that one of their own has been selected for such an important role. I look forward to supporting General Bolden's confirmation and working with him to improve NASA in the years to come."

Major General Bolden was born in Columbia and graduated of C. A. Johnson High School. While serving in the U.S. Marine Corps, he flew more than 100 combat missions in Vietnam. He was selected as an astronaut candidate by NASA in 1980, and has since flown four missions in space. As pilot of the Space Shuttle Discovery in 1990, Major General Bolden and crew successfully deployed the Hubble Space Telescope.

Following the Challenger accident in 1986, Gen. Bolden was named the Chief of the Safety Division at the Johnson Space Center with responsibilities for overseeing the safety efforts in the return-to-flight efforts. He was appointed Assistant Deputy Administrator of NASA headquarters in 1992.

He retired from the Marine Corps in 2003 as the Commanding General of the Third Marine Aircraft Wing after serving more than 34 years, and is currently CEO of JackandPanther LLC, a privately-held military and aerospace consulting firm.
