DARLINGTON COUNTY, SC (WMBF) - Three people have been arrested and a deputy is in the hospital following a methamphetamine bust near the Darlington County Jail.

Darlington Co. law enforcement arrested Eric Virgil Richardson, 34, and Kenneth Leidig, 49, Thursday morning. Richardson, of Ruby, is charged with possession with intent to distribute crystal methamphetamine and distribution of crystal meth. Leidig, of Saluda, VA, was charged with possession with intent to distribute crystal methamphetamine.

After the arrests of Richardson and Leidig, authorities arrested Jessica Adams, 27, of Hartsville, for attempting to purchase the drug.

Byrd said a sheriff's deputy was transported to an area hospital after he began to feel light-headed from exposure to one of the ingredients used to cook meth, "reinforcing the fact that cooking and making meth is very dangerous, and all components that make crystal meth are dangerous," he added.

According to Darlington County Sheriff Wayne Byrd, the bust netted $2,000 in cash, a van, and nearly five grams of crystal meth.

"The bust happened in a parking lot less than a half-mile from the Sheriff's Office. They could see the jail from the parking lot where they were trying to do business," Byrd commented. "Now they can see the parking lot from the jail."

The three are in the Darlington County Detention Center awaiting bond. Richardson was also wanted in NC on other charges.
