Homeowner speaks after would-be robber shot during break-in

SUMTER, SC (WIS) - A burglar picked the wrong house to rob in Sumter County early Wednesday morning, officials say.

Kenyatta McClary says around 4:00am Wednesday two men broke into her bedroom and pointed a shotgun at her.

"Something sound like boom, I don't know, just heard a big boom noise," says McClary, who says she immediately knew the loud noise at her front door wasn't right.

But the would-be burglars didn't know that McClary owns a gun, which her boyfriend used to shoot one of the burglars.

Deputies caught up with the wounded man at a neighbor's house.

Authorities say the man wounded, 25-year-old Kenyard Bolden, is in custody after undergoing surgery earlier for two gunshot wounds.

"I'm glad he got shot, and I'm glad he's at where he's at now because he could have killed us," McClary says.

Mobile home owners might not be as secure as they think. On the outside, the door that was kicked in is thin plastic. On the inside, it's just very light Styrofoam, that really anyone can kick in. So you might want to check your front door and upgrade, just in case.

Now Kenyatta has as new door, a solid one.

"I'm mad because it's like, why my house? I'm very mad at that right now," she says. "I don't know him from a can of paint, why would he come do this to me and my kids?"

The second intruder has not yet been identified or arrested.

This is the third time in six weeks officials say a robbery victim has shot his attacker. In March, a pizza delivery man shot and killed a 17-year-old trying to rob him. And just last week another man was killed when police say he tried to rob an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting in Five Points.
