Officials are encouraging drivers to exercise caution on the road ahead of wintry storm

COLUMBIA, SC (WIS) - Midlands officials are warning drivers to remain vigilant as a major winter storm that could provide a wintry mix bears down on the Midlands.

"Reduce your sped, go back to basics and leave plenty of following distance," Lance Corporal David Jones of the South Carolina Highway Patrol said. "Also have a spare jacket, boots or even food in your car in case you get stranded or are waiting for first responders in the case of an accident."

More than 400 SCDOT workers will be monitoring road conditions in the Upstate this weekend, as it is expected to see more wintry conditions.

On Friday, DOT crews began doing prep work in Newberry County by salting major overpasses and bridges, as they anticipate the county could be the first to see wintry weather in the Midlands early next week.
